2017 Annual Chapter Meeting

The 2017 Annual Chapter Meeting was held Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Hilary J. Boone Center at the University of Kentucky.

Patricia L. Turner, MD, FACS, Director of Member Services for the American College of Surgeons (Chicago, IL) delivered the Kentucky Chapter ACS Ephraim McDowell Oration entitled, "The Surgical Workforce: Generational Change and Innovation."

Mary C. McCarthy, MD, FACS, Second Vice-President for the American College of Surgeons delivered the American College of Surgeons Update entitled, “The Value of Membership.”


2017 KY ACS Chapter President, Cynthia D. Downard, MD, FACS, introduces one of the speakers.

Cynthia D. Downard, MD, FACS presented our distinguished guests, Patricia L. Turner, MD, FACS and Mary C. McCarthy, MD, FACS with julep cups to commemorate their visit to Kentucky.

Cortney Y. Lee, MD, FACS from the University of Kentucky delivered her talk entitled, “Update on Thyroid Cancer.”  Click here to review Dr. Lee’s slides.

A panel session on “Surgical Education” was held at this year’s meeting.  The discussion was moderated by Joseph Zwischenberger, MD, FACS, Chairman of Surgery at the University of Kentucky.  The panel consisted of Sandra Beck, MD, FACS, University of Kentucky Residency Program Director; Matthew Benns, MD, FACS, University of Louisville Residency Program Director; and Angela Mahan, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery from the University of Kentucky.

Ralph Alvarado, MD, Kentucky State Senator (R-28) from Winchester, KY, spoke to the Kentucky Chapter about state medical advocacy and legislative issues.
